Where Y'At?
Mommy
Recovery is slower this time than it was for Huck, but I am still doing well. The first week I had painful contractions as my uterus shrunk back down to it's non-pregnant size. With my first pregnancy, I remember mild cramping post-partum. Like menstrual cramps, and nothing a few hits of ibuprofen couldn't handle. This time they were almost like early labor contractions for about a week. Not so fun. But they are done now, for the most part. So far, I'm 20 pounds down from where I was at the end of my pregnancy and am starting to fit into some of my regular clothes again. I gained a total of 33 pounds this time. I still have a tummy, but I'm so stacked up top that I think I'm really looking pretty good.
I had a second degree tear this time, too. I had a third degree tear with Huck. Like last time, it has not been so bad. I wasn't too concerned because even after my bigger tear last time, I wondered what all the fuss was about with women freaking out about tearing. I suppose it sounds really painful, but other than a little tenderness I have hardly noticed.
Emotionally I'm doing well. No baby blues or bonding issues. Tired for sure, and a little scared about Steve's return to work on Monday, but otherwise I'm feeling healthy. Since Milo has moved into the bed with us, I'm mostly well-rested except for the nights when Huck wanders into the room before morning. But Milo can go for four or five hour stretches between feedings and I am waking less often than I was to go pee in my last trimester. And since I am nursing, I hardly notice it when he does wake up since I can just roll over and feed him without having to fully wake up myself.
The house has been pretty messy lately. We managed to get several loads of laundry done this weekend. And folded and put away! Also did some kitchen clean-up today, so I'm feeling better about that. I haven't had to think about dinner at all since Milo's birth because my two playgroups have been delivering meals to us over the past two weeks. Everything has been delicious and it has been sooo nice to not have to do a big grocery trip both financially and in the sense that I don't have to think about what to cook. We have one more week of meal deliveries and then I'll have to add that back into the routine. I'm not looking forward to that!
Daddy
Steve has taken on a lot more night-time parenting than usual, so he has been pretty tired, as well. When it was just Huck, 99% of the time I would be the one to go to him when he would wake up at night or get a snack at 2:00 AM. This was fine with me because it came with the understanding that I could nap with Huck during the day and Steve couldn't do that at work. Now we have to do more tag-teaming and Steve has been helping with Huck when Huck will have him. He has also had to handle crying Milo more than he did with Huck. When Huck was an infant and he would get upset I would rush to him and immediately nurse him to calm him down. Now, I will nurse Milo until he is full, then I will put Huck to bed. Often, Milo will start crying at some point, but I will stay with Huck until he is asleep. It is important that Huck doesn't feel abandoned by me every time the baby cries, so I have to trust that Milo doesn't need to eat and Steve can handle him. It takes him a little longer without the Magic Mama Juice, but ultimately a little dancing with Daddy will calm Mr. Cranks down.
Steve is on his last day of his two-week paternity leave, so this week will be another transition time for all of us. It has flown by. I think Huck will especially miss having Daddy around since the two of them have been spending lots of fun times together. I expect to be tired for awhile, but it will be good for all of us to get into a regular routine again.
Huck
Huck has been handling siblinghood very well. He is fascinated by Milo and is very concerned about his well-being. There are a few jealousy/possessive issues that have cropped up since Milo's birth. Huck has never had a problem with sharing, but the last few times we have had toddler guests come over, Huck has been very possessive of his toys and will snatch things out of the hands of said toddler. Also, whenever I nurse Milo, Huck will come up to me and push his head into my arm. This is what he does when he is tired, but lately it is his way of getting attention from me when I am nursing. Poor Huck just seems really tired lately. His naps have been shorter and he is waking up earlier. He is going down for naps and bedtime much faster and easier lately, though. And on top of us flipping his world upside down, he is also teething and his fingers are constantly shoved deep in his mouth. Poor kid. He is doing well in spite of everything, though. More whining than I am used to from him, but I am trying to be extra patient with him so he doesn't feel the need to throw a tantrum in order to get my attention.
Milo
Thankfully, Milo seems to be less cranky over the past few days. I hope that he is getting used to life on the outside and this calmer, happier baby will replace the screamer we had for the first week or so. He still freaks out and screams loudly out of nowhere sometimes, but he also has had lots more quiet alert time where he is very pleasant and cute and just kind of looks around and checks out his world. He is calming down better from his tantrums, too. Sometimes nothing will do but some comfort nursing, but he is often willing to calm down with Steve, too. He is fattening up nicely since my milk came in with his cheeks getting noticeably more pinchable. We nurse a lot in the evenings, but the trade-off is nice, long stretches of sleep at night.
